Obv. Forepart of a winged and horned, man-headed monster left.
Rev. Nude youth riding goat prancing left, holding goat's horn with left hand, and holding whip with right, IMEPAION around.
Mint: Himera, ca. 470-450 B.C.

kc! A very beautiful coin indeed. Of course, the images on it probably have a meaning far beyond their mere obvious graphic description, which unfortunately is unknown. The monster on the obverse certainly belongs to some local myth. The rider on the goat on the reverse is sometimes identified as Pan, but in the majority of the cases it is described just as a naked youth.
