Sujet: Gallienus official or not? Dim 25 Mar - 9:37
Hello, I would like to get a little help from you with this poor Gallienus coin:
The size is about 20mm for 2gr.
I'm not sure about the right CMR number... If someone could help me.... Many thanks!!!

The portrait on the obverse looks like those of Marcus Aurelius Claudius from the Milan mint rather than one of Gallienus. So it could be an hybrid or more probably an imitation.

Yes, indubitably a Claudius II Gothicus obverse with a Gallienus reverse... not an official coin !

I'm satisfied and obviously I am agreed with your opinion. Now my question is: official dies for unofficial production or also local made dies?

The dies looks like official... Perhaps this coin has been made with stolen dies ?

Now I have only these two pics... but I think that the piece was struk so my idea is about a coin made by two official dies... but I have no idea if this piece was made inside a mint (Rome) as a hybrid or if the dies was stolen in order to produce a fraudolent emission...

I found some examples (not with this reverse or others "zoo" reverses) in wildwinds of hybrid Claudius II/Gallienus for the mint of Rome... all the specimens looks like official, so the dies came from the mint. I think that the situation of the Rome mint between the end of the reign of Gallienus and Aurelianus was not quiet and clear (see Felicissimus for example) so the mint scalptores had undoubtedly a "double activity" in the production of official and unofficial (fraudolent) issues
